Frequently asked questions
What does canyoning involve?
Canyoning is an adventure activity that consists of descending through a canyon following the course of the water, overcoming natural obstacles such as waterfalls, slides, pools or abseils. It is a dynamic experience that combines water, mountains and adrenaline, always guided by professional instructors.
Are there different difficulty levels?
Yes. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced canyons. Depending on the route, you will find more accessible options ideal for families, as well as more technical descents with abseils, greater elevation or water flow.
What is the minimum age?
The minimum age varies depending on the selected canyon, its difficulty and water flow. Beginner canyons may be suitable from 5–6 years old, while more technical routes are usually from 12–15 years old.
Is it mandatory to know how to swim?
Yes. It is essential to know how to swim, as there are aquatic sections during the route.
Is previous experience required?
No. No previous canyoning experience is required. Before starting the activity, the guide provides a full safety briefing and basic techniques. If you have no experience, we recommend choosing a beginner or intermediate canyon (if in doubt, contact us).
Do I need previous abseiling or canyoning experience?
If you choose an advanced canyon, it is recommended, although not essential. Although the guides will teach you the technique, the canyon is demanding and technical; if this is your first experience in the mountains, you may feel more comfortable starting with a beginner canyon (such as Berrós) or an intermediate one (Estarón Superior).
What kind of obstacles can be found?
Depending on the canyon, you may encounter jumps, natural slides, swimming sections and abseils of different heights.
Are jumps or abseils mandatory?
Jumps are usually optional and, in most cases, there is an alternative to descend these sections by abseiling. Abseiling is mandatory where it is required to progress, and it is always carried out safely under the supervision of the guide.
Is good physical condition required?
A high fitness level is not necessary, but a basic healthy physical condition is required.
Is it a safe activity?
Yes. The activity is carried out with qualified guides and certified equipment. Even so, as an activity in a natural environment, it involves inherent risks that are minimized by following the guide’s instructions.
Will I feel cold?
The water is cold, but the wetsuit provides protection and you quickly warm up during the activity.
What equipment do I need to bring?
Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, glasses strap if needed, closed sports shoes that can get wet (with laces; neoprene shoes are not allowed) and a spare pair of shoes. Optionally, you may bring a thermal or lycra top.
All technical equipment (wetsuit, helmet, harness, ropes, etc.) is included.
Can I wear water shoes, flip-flops or closed beach sandals?
Not allowed. Footwear must be closed sports shoes with laces that can get wet.
Can I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Yes, but it is important that glasses are properly secured with a strap. At the AranExperience shop (Av. Pas d’Arro 11) they are available for purchase. Contact lenses are also a good alternative.
Are there changing rooms or showers?
The base has changing rooms to get changed before and/or after the activity, but there are no showers.
Can I bring my phone or record the activity?
Phones are not allowed, as they may be lost or damaged in the water. If you want to record, some helmets have mounts for GoPro or similar cameras; you just need to request it when the equipment is handed out.
Where can I leave my belongings?
At the base you will find lockers to leave your personal belongings. We recommend not bringing valuables and, if you do, leaving them in your vehicle.
Is transport included?
No. The activity does not include transport from the base to the starting point nor the return to the base. Transport must be done with your own vehicle.
Is the activity cancelled in bad weather?
No. The activity takes place even if it rains, as you will get wet anyway. It is only modified or cancelled if conditions pose a safety risk.
Can I join alone or do I need a group?
Individual bookings are usually accepted. However, at certain times of the season the system may require a minimum of 2 participants and not allow the booking to be completed online. In that case, please contact us so we can check availability and manage your booking.
Are there any medical restrictions?
Not recommended for pregnant women or people with heart conditions, injuries or serious medical problems. If in doubt, we recommend contacting us before booking.
Can people with disabilities participate?
People with disabilities must be accompanied by their legal guardian, and participation will be subject to prior assessment by the technical team.
