As evening falls in the Pyrenees, nature changes its rhythm. The last sounds of the day give way to crepuscular wildlife, the calls of the red deer begin to echo through the mountains and, little by little, the first stars appear on the horizon.
Red Deer Rut & Astronomy is an experience that combines observing and listening to the red deer rut with a guided astronomy session under the Pyrenean night sky. A 3 to 4-hour activity designed to discover two different worlds in a single outing: wildlife at dusk and the night sky after darkness falls.
The first part of the experience will take us to a carefully selected area to listen to and observe the red deer rut. From approximately mid-September to mid-October, males produce their characteristic powerful calls to attract females and compete for territory, creating one of the most intense natural events of the Pyrenean autumn.
Accompanied by a mountain guide and specialised environmental educator, we will learn how to listen to the surroundings, interpret tracks and identify some of the sounds made by crepuscular wildlife. We will also discover how red deer behave during the rutting season and why it is so important to observe them from a distance, in silence and without interfering with their natural behaviour.
But the experience does not end when the last light of the day disappears.
After the deer rut, with a hot herbal infusion in our hands and away from artificial lights, we will begin a second exploration: this time looking up at the sky.
First, we will learn how to read the night sky with the naked eye. We will identify the main visible constellations, locate the North Star and learn how to navigate using the night sky. Depending on the date and the conditions that evening, we may also observe the Moon, planets and other celestial objects.
The experience will continue with telescope observation, allowing us to take a closer look at some of the objects visible that night and discover details hidden from the naked eye.
And while we observe the stars, we will also discover the stories our ancestors found among them. The session places special emphasis on traditional Pyrenean mythology, connecting constellations, navigation, landscape and ancient ways of interpreting the night sky.
From the calls of the red deer to the silence of the stars. An experience designed to listen, observe and understand the nature of the Pyrenees after nightfall.

- Pyrenean mythology: We will discover stories connected to the night sky and learn how mountain communities used the stars to navigate, understand the landscape and interpret the world around them.
DID YOU KNOW...?
The red deer rut is one of the great natural events of autumn in the Pyrenees. During the mating season, male red deer produce powerful calls to attract females and warn rival males of their presence.
The activity is always carried out while maintaining a safe and respectful distance from the animals. Our aim is not to get close to them, but to learn how to detect, listen to and observe their behaviour without disturbing their natural activity.
The presence and behaviour of wild animals can never be guaranteed. This is precisely part of what makes the experience so special: we are observing genuine wildlife, not animals in captivity or controlled situations.
ASTRONOMY UNDER THE PYRENEAN NIGHT SKY
Once the red deer observation has finished, we will turn our attention from the forest to the night sky. We will begin by learning how to navigate and recognise the sky with the naked eye before using the telescope.
What we can observe will depend on the time of year, the phase of the Moon and atmospheric conditions. Every night is different, so the session will be adapted to the constellations, planets and other celestial objects visible at that particular time.
The astronomy session will be combined with stories from traditional Pyrenean mythology, traditional navigation techniques and the relationship that generations of mountain communities have maintained with the night sky.

OBSERVE WITHOUT DISTURBING: OUR COMMITMENT
The rutting season is a particularly sensitive stage in the red deer's biological cycle. For this reason, all our outings follow principles of responsible wildlife observation.
We keep our distance, minimise noise, avoid unnecessary lights and never chase, attract or disturb animals in order to obtain a sighting. The welfare of the wildlife always comes before the sighting.
We want discovering nature to contribute to its conservation. For this reason, good environmental practices are not simply a recommendation: they are an essential part of the experience and must be respected by all participants.
